It's a show that will leave you smiling, singing, and reconnected with the simple joys of life and lessons of kindness that could certainly help today’s tumultuous world. This production takes the 1970s “hippie” style into a more modern background. Filling the massive stage at the Opera House with scaffolding and the shared décor and staging of a concurrently running production, the setting appears to be a stage ready to welcome actors to their first table read of a show. Actors casually saunter on to the stage from all directions being greeted by the director, getting their scripts, and interacting with other actors for the first time. The Rochester Opera House is a 750-seat theater in the city hall of Rochester, a city in Strafford County, New Hampshire, United States.

The Rochester Opera House, located above City Hall at 31 Wakefield Street, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to a mission of “Arts For All”. As his father, Prue makes a wonderful transition from his stoic self to a more tolerant father as he takes on elements of the former rock guitar player he once was. Thanks to the after-dinner game, Full Disclosure, Gall plays some of the best moments of the show as she goes from neglected and unhappy wife to a wild and wacky vixen in the number, “Waiting,” where she ends the song fully prone on the dining room table. For the first time in nearly a quarter century, the Rochester Opera House presents The Sound of Music, opening Friday, July 29th. The show will run with multiple performances until Sunday, August 21st.

Comedian Bob Marley (Tuesday, December 27)Bob loves being a comedian. He lives in Maine which is the best state in the world – maybe even the universe. And he’s a glutton for punishment – which means he’s back to ROH again this year. Featured regularly on SiriusXM Radio, he was inducted into the Guinness Book of World’s Records for The Longest Stand Up Comedy Show by an Individual – clocking in at 40 hours of continuous standup! Musical accompaniment is provided by a recorded musical track which is a bit different for live theater.

September Events Fill the Stage at Rochester Opera House
Understanding such complexities was aided considerably by an extensive study finished in June 1985 by Nancy Alberto and Heidi Barrett, students of the Department of Civil Engineering at the nearby University of New Hampshire. Estimates for restoring the opera house and also establishing an endowment fund for maintenance and program scheduling ranged up to $1.2 million. Due to the enormity of the task and the size of the necessary costs, the first effort to restore the opera house only accomplished improvements to meet fire and safety codes, as well as much-needed audience amenities. Comic Hypnotist Frank Santos, Jr. (Saturday, February 18)Frank Santos, Jr. has been mesmerizing audiences for over 20 years with his spectacular display of mind-bending antics that can turn any skeptic into a fan. Under his hypnotic spell, audience members are more than willing to follow every command, from awkward to outrageous in the unpredictable, hilarious, laugh-until-your-sides-hurt R-rated comedy show. Santos is returning to our stage by popular demand for an eighth season.
Review: THE ADDAMS FAMILY-A NEW MUSICAL COMEDY at Rochester Opera House
They perform less like a Broadway musical troupe and more like kids in story time at Bible Class. The cast is consistently strong with loads of theater experience under their belts including some who have previously graced the Rochester Opera House stage. Closing out our September stage lineup is Dirty Deeds, The AC/DC Experience out of Boston, MA. This was my first visit to the Rochester Opera House where I was impressed with the unique design of the performing space and auditorium. (It first opened its doors in 1908.) It is a bit odd having the concession stand and bar within the auditorium, but it seems to work for them. The Sunday matinee audience seemed to sort out drink orders just fine and the smell of buttered popcorn simply added to a wonderfully entertaining experience.
It has the unique architectural feature of a fully moveable floor, perhaps the last of this design in existence. Look out for a fantastic night of evidential and heart-centered messages on September 14th from Spirit with two NH Natives and Internationally renowned mediums, Cindy Kaza and Lauren Rainbow. They will be sharing their unique styles of mediumship with a few audience members. Rochester Opera House is featuring five nights of entertainment on their historic stage, featuring mediums, award-winning Skerryvore hailing from Scotland, to concert tributes to some iconic bands.
Christian Arnold as Judas is the perfectly cast bad boy decked out in leather and chains more like a biker than apostle. He’s a rock star in the opening “Prepare Ye” and a soft shoe extraordinaire in “All for the Best” performed with Foley. His scenes with Foley are powerful and engaging as he foreshadows his characters eventual betrayal.
For the 17th season, Sole City Dance will present its enchanting version of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s tale. Featuring the mysterious toymaker Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara, and her beloved Nutcracker Prince, dancing snowflakes, battling mice, & many other fantastic and colorful characters. Freckleface Strawberry The Musical, based on the beloved New York Times best-selling book by celebrated actress, Julianne Moore, is a fun and touching family musical. Over the last 16 years, Skerryvore has brought their performances to audiences across the globe, from their early days in Scottish West Coast halls and bars, to Festival crowds throughout the world. Picking up Scottish music’s ‘Live Act of the Year’ twice on the way – they bring their high-energy performance to Rochester on September 22.
This is a great group of singers and dancers who add fun elements to the show. One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. With its infectious energy, powerful message, and stellar performances, “Godspell” at the Rochester Opera House is a theatrical experience not to be missed.
Audiences members dressed as their character favorites simply added to the festivities. As the story unfolds, the family patriarch, Gomez (Kevin Mahaney), finds himself caught between his wife and sadistic teenage daughter, Wednesday (Michelle Faria). It seems she’s caught in the throes of romance with Lucas (Samuel Tolley) – a sweet beau, as they face the ritual of every courtship, the meeting of the parents with his being strictly suburban and Wednesday’s being anything but. Wednesday also confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother that they plan to marry.
While it works fine, I would suggest a bit of work in balancing the music with the vocals. It gets a bit out of whack especially with individual voices in group numbers. First introduced in the New Yorker magazine back in the 1930s by cartoonist, Charles Addams, the ghoulish Addams family is well known for their graveyard humor which eventually became an iconic TV series and hit movie. With a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the musical depicts an American family with an affinity for all things macabre. After celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2008, the Rochester Opera House is still in operation today.

And don't forget to check the New Hampshire forecast before you head out. Scenes move remarkably well for a production that runs two and a half hours with intermission. Set design by Dane Leeman uses every inch of the massive Rochester Opera House stage with simple stagings offset by ever changing backdrops enhanced by a vibrant lighting design by Christian Arnold. Choreographer, Jo Meallo uses every opportunity to showcase her work particularly in the numbers with the arisen from the dead ancestors. Costume designer, Lesley Neilson-Bowman had her work cut out to costume the undead cast as well. In the lead role, Foley, masterfully guides the performance with precisely timed storytelling and melodic tunes in “Save the People” and “Beautiful City” though his rendition of “Alas For You,” was notably strained. He creates a charming and childlike Jesus, nurturing and loving with a whimsical style. The current production of “Godspell” at the Rochester Opera House is like no other you’ve experienced before.
Restored to look like it did over ninety years ago, the opera house offers the visitor a unique viewing experience. Joining Mike on stage will be the brilliant Paul D’Angelo, along with Funnymen Steve Bjork, Kathe Farris & Dan Donahue. So, bring your Funny Valentine & enjoy a great evening of laughs with Mike and his comedy compadres. Mahaney brings his own unique twist to the character of Gomez that is distinctly different from the stereotypical ones.
